LASIK / Refractive Surgery
When we talk about Refractive Surgery we are referring to LASIK and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). LASIK is the most common type of Refractive Surgery that has been performed in the United States since its approval by the FDA in 1996. We have been proud to provide LASIK and PRK at the WK Refractive Surgery Center (formerly Steen-Hall Eye Institute) since 1996 to our patients in the ARK-LA-TEX.
In 2012, WK opened the new "state of the art" WK Refractive Surgery Center with the most advanced technology available in the United States. It houses the FS200 Aqua, the latest advancement in femtosecond lasers and the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q (Watch Video).
WK Refractive Surgery Center has joined with a group of dedicated doctors and staff committed to providing you with the most advanced technology, attention to each individuals need for optimum vision and personal care. Our philosophy has always been to treat you the same way we would treat our family.

Who is a Candidate
If you are between the ages of 18 and 80 and wearing glasses or contact lenses you may qualify for one of the many options available. To determine if you are a candidate, we recommend that you call any one of our 3 convenient locations to schedule a free screening. The screenings are available to you Monday thru Friday and will take approximately 30 minutes. For the screening, you may wear your contact lenses and no dilation drops will be used so you will be able to return to work or proceed with your day. Instead of scheduling a free screening, you may proceed with scheduling a comprehensive evaluation. Our trained staff will guide you on the path to freedom from glasses and/or contact lenses.
The LASIK screening is FREE. When you come in for the comprehensive pre-surgical evaluation our fee is $150.00. This evaluation will take between 1 – 2 hours to allow us the necessary time to determine which procedure is best suited for your visual needs and to review your preop and postop care. Because this is an elective procedure we will not file this evaluation with your insurance. Our fee for LASIK and PRK is $1995.00 per eye. During the 1st year following your procedure all follow-up visits pertaining to your procedure as well as any enhancements are included in the surgery fee.
We have several options available for you to pay.
Payment methods: Any major credit card, Healthcare Spending Accounts and Financing available through CareCredit (to those who qualify)
*an additional 5% discount will be applied to anyone paying by cash, cashier’s check or money order.
At the WK Refractive Surgery Center we have provided for you and your family a very comfortable setting as we prepare you for this special moment. We have available to you and your family refreshments, television and WiFi. We also have a room dedicated as our “family viewing room” where only your family can observe your surgery and be right there with you to share in this experience. You and your family should be prepared to be with us on the day of your procedure for approximately 1 - 2 hours.
We will give you a Valium prior to taking you into the laser suite. The purpose of the Valium is to help relax you, it will not put you to sleep. Once in the laser suite we will clean around your eyes with medicated soap. Throughout the procedure we will put drops in your eyes to numb them. We will then have you lie down and position you under the 1st laser. This laser, the FS200 Aqua, will create a flap on the cornea. This step will take less than 5 minutes to perform on both eyes. You will feel some pressure but should not be painful to you. Once completed we will then move you over to the 2nd laser, the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q, which will treat the prescription necessary to eliminate the need for glasses and/or contact lenses. The total time to treat both eyes is approximately 10 – 15 minutes.
Once we have finished the procedure and you sit up you will immediately appreciate the improvement in your vision. Most patients describe their vision, at that moment, to be similar to opening their eyes under water with a slight fuzzy/haziness to everything. Our patients begin to describe what they can now see in the room, they will read the clock on the wall or smile as they see their family member watching them through the glass door in the family room. For the staff, it is a moment that we never tire observing.
After your procedure your doctor will meet with you and your family to answer any final questions. We then encourage you to go home and sleep for the first 3 – 5 hours following surgery. Once you wake up from your nap the rest of your day you will enjoy your renewed vision.
Your followup visits are 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year.
You will be using eye drops to protect your eyes from infection and allow your eye to heal for approximately 1 week. You will also use Artificial Tears for approximately 6-8 weeks. No eye makeup for one week and no swimming, sauna or hot tub for 1 month following surgery. The majority of your daily activities are resumed after your 1 day follow-up visit. Most patients will drive themselves to their 1 day postop appointment and return to work within 2 -3 days after surgery.
