Glaucoma is characterized by increased intraocular pressure resulting in damage to the nerve in the back of the eye. Glaucoma is commonly referred to as “the thief in the night” because patients do not have any symptoms until they have lost significant vision. To determine if you have glaucoma your eye doctor will measure the pressure inside the eye and also look inside your eye at the health of the nerve in the back of your eye.
Glaucoma can affect anyone but it is more prevalent in African Americans and affects more males than females. It is also more common in patients who are nearsighted. If you have a family history of glaucoma, you are at a higher risk of developing the disease. You may also develop glaucoma after an injury to the eye or after years of steroid treatment.
Fortunately, we can treat most patients with glaucoma. The most common treatment requires daily use of prescription eye drops to manage your eye pressure at a level that keeps you from losing eyesight. When your pressure is unmanageable with eye drops, surgery may be required by an eye doctor who specializes in glaucoma.
